The work in this collection is driven by the concept of liminality from the Latin, limen, meaning threshold. It is the space between the familiar and unfamiliar characterized by uncertainty and instability. The passage between the past and an uncertain future is marked by a loss of the recognizable and a sense of alienation.
The aritsts’ response to the liminal dilemma is the creation of art that is orderly and optimistic; exploring the relationship between basic elements of colour and geometry, repetition of form and the creation of depth, while honouring a minimalist aesthetic.
The exploration and experimentation during this project has influenced MacFarlane’s current artistic practice such that she continues to make work that references many of these visual motifs.
